Clare Carswell

Clare Carswell MA(RCA), is a British/Irish artist, based near Oxford UK, who works in the
intersections between performance, drawing and writing. She exhibits and performs in
galleries, museums and for platform events in the UK and internationally.
Works such as SHIM, for HELP! at Hundred Years Gallery London 2026, WONKY
STRANGE and TA TA for Women’s World at Pandora Gallery Berlin 2023 & 24, invoke the
trials and comedy, of inhabiting an ageing body and the need to test its strength in acts of
fierce imagination.

“My work is located at the intersection of performance art practice, auto ethnography, age
and gender. Recursive enquiries into the haptic experience of making, observing
adaptations made with age, inform hybrid responses to ideas of art production and the
archive. Cultural, societal and economic factors that led to discernible absences in content,
productivity and chronology within it are examined. Overlooked life stories that account for
such gaps, are made visible through imaginative retellings. In recent works embodied
drawings that have left the page, appear in feminist performative actions that extend my
reach beyond my archive into the natural world, and my scope from past to future works.”

Clare synergises her practice and curation through the COU COU project, curating
platform performance art events, residencies and exhibitions. She leads the BIDDY project
that challenges lazy societal stereotypes of the marginalised and invisible older woman,
and showcases the work of women artists over fifty who have maintained their art practice
over decades.

Clare has an MA in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art London 1988.

She is currently revisiting studentship by studying for a Masters by Research
Degree (MRes) at Oxford Brookes University.
