Finbarr Dillon
On 11 March 2026 by Deej_Fabyc1Finbarr Dillon (b 1962) is a Sound Designer and Composer living in Co Clare, Ireland,
working in the areas of Electroacoustic, Acousmatic and Sound Collages to create “Fixed
Media” pieces of Sound Art.
He comes to working with sound and music from an Electronic Engineering background’
working for some 27 years in the Electronics industry both here in Ireland and in America.
In late 1990 he had the opportunity to take a vocational ‘Sound Design, Audio Engineering’
course at Media Productions Services’ in Brixton, London, UK.
Following on his returned, first to Trinity College Dublin to do a Postgraduate Diploma in
‘Music and Media Technologies’. Upon completion of his studies at TCD, he went on to
pursue a Masters in Music Technology at the University of Limerick.
I derive and get most of my inspiration from two sources. Firstly, the passage from the
book “The New Atlantis” (1627), by Francis Bacon. And secondly, a lot of the source
material and ideas for my compositions come from the attributes, characteristic and
idiosyncrasies of the laws of nature, and the natural world. I have used my “MRI Brain
Scans” images as source material, for compositions, or use the protein sequence of
“alpha-Carotene” ie its DNA as the source material for a composition. And then there is the
Seismic recordings of the North Clare Earthquake of the 6th of May 2010, which is the
loudest recording of a Seismic event on the island of Ireland, as recorded by the Dublin
Institute for Advanced Studies.
